During the early 1950s a group of parents living in London got together to solve a problem. They each had a child with a learning disability - then known as mental handicap - but could find no organised educational, leisure or support organisations. So they organised their own support organisation which has grown into the multi-million pound organisation known today as National MENCAP. One of these parents, Mary Wheeler, moved to live in Sussex and in 1953 founded our Society, the Mid-Sussex MENCAP Society. For her work with people with a learning disability Mary was awarded an MBE and Mary acted as the Society's Chairman and later President until she passed away in 2003.
Mid-Sussex MENCAP is run by a small committee of volunteers whose job it is to make sure the Society meets its objectives which are set out on the next page.
We share Nationa MENCAP's vision is of a world where everyone with a learning disability has an equal right to choice, opportunity and respect - with the support they need.
Over the past 10 years we have raised a total of £66,000, in addition to bequests received from local residents. Grants and donations totalling over £150,000 have been given to people and organisations. £71,000 has been spent on our own activities and events.
We are very proud of our Mid-Sussex Gateway Clubs which provide a local, weekly venue for relaxation, enjoyment, education and socialising in Burgess Hill and East Grinstead.
